Curtain rods can be a functional or very stylish addition to your home. They are simply designed to hold your curtains and drapery in place. There are literally hundreds of unique designs available from home improvement stores and on the internet. This wealth of competition means there are some great bargains around if you look hard enough. The prices usually reflect the quality and durability of the rods, but the amount you are willing to spend will depend on what look you are after, be it for extra style or just for something to hang your curtains with.

There is a whole host of materials, from iron curtain rods to wood curtain rods. The material you choose will also depend on the finish you want, but also the functionality, you want the rod to do the job it is intended to do. It is very important to realise the weight of the curtains and the size before you decide on what is best to buy, because some rods are better designed for different types of curtains.

Measuring the size of the window or windows is also essential before you buy because you need to get this part right. There can be much frustration and hassle if you end up buying something that just does not fit or look the way you intended it to be.

Will the rods be visible once the curtain is hung, or will they be hideden behind a valance? Determine this first as it can affect whether you go for some kind of decorative curtain rods or just a simple plain design. Decorative rods can cost much more but they have the advantage of really adding to the overall feel of the room and curtains.

Because there is such a large choice today it can be a bit overwhelming to find exactly what you are looking for. Most furniture or home improvement stores will be able to give some general ideas as to what will work with your room, but more importantly, what will work with your style of curtains. The online stores also have some expert help on hand, as well as extensive brochures and catalogs which allows you to quickly browse through them and gain a better idea. Remember that it is your home you are choosing for, not an example home. You want your choice to be unique, so it is well worth spending the time to find the right curtain rods.

You may be working to a tight budget for a project, and so this may affect the rod you go for, but there are some really sharp and functional designs for not that much cash.

Larger window frames will probably need brackets and supports to make sure the rod will not bend or distort under the weight of the curtain or drapes. If you are only looking to hang lightweight drapes on the rods then this may not be as essential, and there are some clever magnetic curtain rods that can be fitted in minutes and still give good support. Heavier curtains will obviously require added support, and so the rods will need to have a larger diameter to cope with this weight. They may cost more but this is essential unless you want your rod to come crashing down along with the brackets and the drapes.

If you really want to add some style then there are many finials that will do the trick. The finials are the end caps of the rod, so instead of just having the rod end on show, you can make this much better to look at by investing in these elaborate finials. They can be attached very easily, or you can just buy the rod with them already in place. Some of these designs will improve the overall style, or some can create a real focal point that will impress your friends and guests when they come round to visit. They also have a practical function in that they stop the curtain rings from slipping off the end of the rod.

All in all, there are many colours and styles that you may not have thought of with these rods or poles. They can be decorative or simple, but the main point is that they offer good support and smooth running for your curtains to glide along.
